Geothermal Heat Pumps

A marvelous technology is allowing homeowners in Northern Colorado (and all across the nation!) to heat and cool their homes, cut utility bills by 25 to 50 percent, and help save Planet Earth. This advanced heating system is called a Geo-thermal Heat Pump System.

Although this technology has been around for years, it has recently becoming a common choice among consumers because of the many benefits, which include:

  • No large, noisy outdoor unit
  • Dramatically reduced energy bills
  • Quiet operation
  • Elimination of greenhouse gas emissions
  • Reduced hot water heating costs
  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Long equipment life

How Geo-thermal Heat Pump Systems Work

A Geo-thermal unit circulates fluid through the ground to either pick up heat energy from the earth, or reject heat energy back to the earth.

In winter, heat is extracted from the ground, passed along refrigerated coils to warm it, and ‘pumped’ into your home.

In the summer, the process is reversed to extract the heat from your home, and replace it with cooler air from the earth’s core.

The Big Difference

Rather than rely on the air outside your home, where temperatures can vary greatly, Geo-thermal heat pumps take advantage of the relatively constant (approximately 54°) temperature of the earth to heat and cool your home.

This amazing transfer is made utilizing “ground loops”, a series of plastic pipes buried under the earth, and covered by landscaping, be it a manicured lawn and flower beds, or a reflection of the natural setting in which the home resides. There is no noisy or unsightly outdoor equipment.

Superior Indoor Comfort Year Round

By taking advantage of the consistent temperature underground, a Geo-thermal heat pump system provides optimal year round comfort levels and eliminates indoor hot and cold zones and “draftiness” experienced with a standard heat pump system.

As an added benefit, a Geo-thermal heat pump can provide cost free hot water during summer months simply by utilizing the heat extracted from your home.

In winter months, the cost of heating residential demand water is drastically reduced compared to standard gas equipment.

The Green Connection

A Geo-thermal heat pump system makes sense for our environment because it simply transfers heat (or cool) into your home using the earth’s natural thermal energy, which is a renewable resource.

These systems burn no fossil fuels, and therefore dramatically reduce emission of greenhouse gases to our environment. Indoors, your family is comfortable and secure, without exposure to fumes and emissions from combustible materials associated with other heating systems.

The ‘Other Green’ Benefit

Although a Geo-thermal heat pump system will require a higher initial investment than a standard heating/cooling system, costs are quickly recouped by dramatically reduced utility bills and enhanced home resale values. Further, with natural resources and fossil fuels dwindling and greenhouse gases threatening our planet, tax credits and energy rebates are widely available for energy conscious consumers.

Practical Applications

While Geo-thermal heat pump systems can be designed and installed in any home, they are best suited for new construction installation, as they tend to be intrusive on your existing landscaping. Other options such as Hybrid heating systems offer practical, less expensive and eco-friendly alternatives.
