Symptoms of Problems
Symptoms that call for a Heating Professional…
Symptom 1: Short Cycling. When your system runs for short spurts (less than three minutes) before shutting off, the problem is called short cycling. this could be and indication that your thermostat is out of adjustment. this also occurs when the heat exchanger overheats and the burner automatically shuts off to prevent damage.
Symptom 2: Irregular Flame. Perfectly functioning burners have fairly even rows of flames. If the flames are uneven or rollout the front of the furnace, this could be an indication of dirty burners or a cracked heat exchanger.
Symptom 3: Odd Noises or Rumbling. High pitched squealing sounds may be caused by a slipping belt or a motor or bearings needing lubrication. Rumbling sounds may indicate dirty or poorly adjusted burners or pilot.
Symptom 4: Chronic Illness. Frequent headaches or flu-like symptoms can be a sign of combustion gases leaking from a cracked heat exchanger, or even carbon monoxide leaking from an exhaust stack. With these symptoms, you should have your heating system checked out by a professional, even if your carbon monoxide alarm remains silent!
Symptom 5: Soot Deposits. Soot is a fine black or white powder that collects when combustion is incomplete. the presence of soot may indicate that your burners need adjusting, or that you have a cracked heat exchanger.
Symptom 6: Carbon Monoxide Alarms. If your alarm sounds and you are experiencing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, leave your home immediately and call 911. If you have no symptoms, first check the detector and push the reset button. Call a qualified HVAC company who can test with proper instruments.
